We Happy Few Announces First Playable Character
We Happy Few first debuted at PAX East 2015, yet it feels as though we only know about the game’s bare bones. Blood and drugs circulate Wellington Wells, an alternative 1960s British town, in a game that looks like a combination of Bioshock and Brave New World. Your job is to escape the drug-induced monotony forced upon you by the government. That was enough for Australia to effectively ban the game, but not enough for intrigued potential players. With less than two weeks until the game’s launch, Compulsion Games is finally providing details on the title’s three playable characters.
Arthur Hastings made his first appearance back in 2015 as the original trailer’s protagonist. He’s a gawky, spectacled redactor for the Department of Printing, Recycling, and Archives. Described in the E3 2018 trailer as “utterly unremarkable,” Arthur stops taking his Joy (the complacency drug) and begins fighting for survival.
Art Director Whitney Clayton describes Arthur as “the archetypal, awkward bureaucrat: the paper-pushing everyman.” He eventually forgoes his Joy after reading a newspaper story about his younger brother, Percy. Arthur abandoned Percy during the German Occupation of England. Desperate to atone, Arthur plunges headfirst into a world of violence and resistance.
Despite looking like a nerd, Arthur’s long limbs make him an ideal escape artist when being pursued by baddies. Those elongated arms also make him proficient at swinging melee weapons at foes. Compulsion Games has promised that each character will have special skills to navigate the dangerous streets of Wellington Wells.
Players will also take on the roles of another pair of resisting citizens: Sally Boyle and Ollie Starkey. Based on the E3 trailer, it appears Sally’s strengths revolve around sneaking, while Ollie focuses more on explosives and crafting. Expect more details on those two individuals in the upcoming days.
After several postponements, We Happy Few launches on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on August 10, 2018. The wait is nearly over, gamers.
