This is certainly surprising news. RuneScape has bested its lifespan in the video game industry with its current and highly popular existence. After the announcement and release of Old School RuneScape, which allows crossplay with PC users, it’s as popular as ever and it looks like Jagex is going to take advantage of this.

According to the LinkedIn page of Jagex developer, Nathan Richardsson, there’s currently an “unannounced RuneScape shared world action role playing game” in development. Now, how does a an ancient game like this become a fully developed action RPG? Well, pretty easy. RuneScape has all the makings for one and Richardsson has plenty of experience in creating development for big name studios. With experience as a senior producer at developers like Ubisoft, Behaviour Interactive, Trion Worlds, and CCP Games, it sounds like Jagex is determined to become more relevant in the video game industry with hard-hitting devs.

As obvious as this may sound, a RuneScape action RPG will differ significantly in combat and gameplay style. This indicates a considerable shift from the trademark style the game is known for. However, after the official shut down of Classic, perhaps Jagex is looking to fill the void with a more impactful presence within the industry? For now, we’ll have to wait in anticipation and see what comes of this “unannounced” project.
