The Game Awards 2020

The Game Awards are upon us once again and the year 2020 has present no end of tough competition with quite a few games thriving under the worldwide pandemic. With the proceedings now in the rearview, the likes of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II appears to have come ahead as the clear winner, with the Sony-branded title getting the gold a total of seven times, including Best Game Direction, Narrative, Performance (for Laura Bailey’s Abby), and Game of the Year. Rounding out the awards, Final Fantasy VII Remake won in the Best RPG and Music areas, Ghost of Tsushima took over the Best Art Direction and fan-vote-based Player’s Voice categories, while Hades dominated the Indie and Action nominees.

The hugely-popular Among Us didn’t leave empty-handed, taking home both awards it was nominated for in the Mobile and Multiplayer genres. Elden Ring (of course) won the Most Anticipated poll, Fall Guys’ savvy social media earned Best Community Support, Half-Life: Alyx proved to be the best in VR, and No Man’s Sky took home the Best Ongoing – a far cry from its much-derided 2016 launch. Many other fan-favorites were recognized as well, with Tell Me Why taking home the Games For Impact award, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate reigning victorious over the Fighting category, Animal Crossing: New Horizons proving its supremacy with families, and Tony Hawk besting the Sports and Racing category.
