Sly Cooper Animated Series To Premiere Next Year (VIDEO)

In 2014, Rainmaker and Blockade Entertainment announced their second CG animated film intended for release in 2016 titled Sly Cooper. However, little news was shared since and both companies have gone completely silent. Due to the rather light reception of the Ratchet & Clank film, it seems a lot of quiet legal matters were settled and the rights were sold to France-based studio Technicolor Animation Productions (Alvin!!! & The Chipmunks) instead. It was last year that they announced their collaboration with Sony Interactive Entertainment to bring an animated series instead.

A full 52 episodes will reintroduce Sly Cooper to audiences of all ages Fall of next year, adapting the raccoon thief with a heart of gold from an iconic video game character to a small screen star. Taking his adventurous “James Bond, Batman, and Danny Ocean” characteristics to restore justice to his city.

In an interview by PGS with Dev Maden, a creator at Sony PlayStation, the two get down to the details on what their goals for the series will be. Ultimately, the developers want to make the animated show just as entertaining to “watch as it was to play” back in the day and the team believes the hard work they’re putting into bringing Sly Cooper to life will show how much he will resonate with audiences.

I also believe what has kept Sly resonating with people is that while it may look like a simple and colorful show for kids at a first glance, there are some deeper issues to friendship that the guys deal with: the idea of loss, sacrifice, revenge, romance to name a few.

These are things that a younger player might not immediately understand while playing the game, and in some cases even challenge them, but because of that, I think it’s something that stays with them and as they get older, return to and appreciate on a completely different level. At its heart the Sly Cooper gang is about creating lifelong relationships and having crazy adventures with your pals.”

The first episode of the series will premiere in October 2019, bringing Sly and his trusty friends Bentley and Murray to life. From the thief, the brains of the operation, and and getaway driver. They’re certainly a force to be reckoned with.

What characters do you hope Technicolor will bring to the limelight? What do you think of an animated adaptation of Sly Cooper? Sure, he didn’t wear pantalones in the game, but they’ve got to take some creative liberties. Let us know what you think in the comments section below or start a conversation on DFTG Facebook page.
