Remedy’s Sam Lake Says Quantum Break’s Live-Action Format Was Intended for Alan Wake 2
The sequel to 2012’s Alan Wake by Remedy Games has been long awaited by fans of the original. The company has expressed that the sequel has always been a project that they’re willing to do, but that they keep running into road blocks that seem to be due to poor timing. That’s how Remedy and Microsoft Studios’ Quantum Break came into fruition. When presented with Alan Wake 2 (AW2), Microsoft wanted a fresh IP (intellectual property), so AW2 ended up shelved. It turns out that the live-action format used in Quantum Break was originally presented as a concept for Alan Wake 2.
Quantum Break was a push from Microsoft for the Xbox One. The plan was to incorporate a new IP with a live-action TV show to coincide with the Xbox One’s all-in-one niche. While, innovative and intuitive, Quantum Break just didn’t quite hit the intended mark. In a recent interview, Remedy’s Creative Director Sam Lake revealed that the episodic live-action format used in QB was originally intended to be used in the Alan Wake sequel. Lake stated:
“In the early concept of Alan Wake 2 that we took to Microsoft… there was the idea of it being episodic and in between having live-action episodes. That part they loved. They were like, ‘This is a keeper, but… we are looking for a new IP.’ They wanted to own that. Alan Wake is ours so that was off the table, so it needed to be something else.
If you look at Microsoft at that point, with them working on Xbox One – and it was still some way off – they strongly saw it as an entertainment device. If you remember how it came out there was a lot of talk about TV and live action.”
That doesn’t quite heal the wounds of longing for an Alan Wake sequel, but it does allow for some thought on what could’ve have been – or better – what might come to be. Remedy Games is currently working on a few projects, unfortunately none of those have been confirmed to be AW2. There are plenty of games worth waiting on, and another trip to Bright Falls is definitely one of them.
Do you think that the episodic live-action format would work for an Alan Wake sequel? Are you desperately hoping an announcement is coming in the near future?
