PS4 Users Warned As Spam Messages Reportedly Breaking Consoles
Netizens across Reddit have reported a spam message spreading across PlayStation 4 consoles via private messages, causing system crashes and even forcing factory resets for some. The string of reports come from several PS4 users, where a unassuming message is sent to the account and upon opening will bug out, crash, or brick the system. Fortunately for those in fear of this affecting them, there are a few simple steps to take to prevent further damage.
Thanks to a Reddit user by the name of “Vilens40,” console owners can head on over to the ‘settings‘ page of the PS4. From there go to account management, privacy settings, enter password, personal info, and messaging. From there set messages to ‘friends’ or ‘no one’ until this situation is addressed by Sony.
How To Block PS4 Spam Messages
- Go to Settings > Account Management > Privacy Settings
- Enter password
- Personal Info > Messaging
- Set Messages to ‘Friends’ or ‘No One’
Netizens have not yet discovered the cause or intent behind the messages. There doesn’t seem to be any other problems in terms of the console functioning properly after users factory reset their system, but that does entail wiping all data and saved content from the console. That could prove highly inconvenient for those who purchased limited-time freebies or various other DLC that can no longer be obtained.
However, by changing the privacy settings on your PlayStation 4, it should prevent any future damage from malicious messages. According to other concerned netizens, these settings can be changed from the PS4 mobile app as well, so make sure to do so for precautionary measures.
Passing on a question to you, if you were one of the console owners affected by the private messages, how did it affect you?
