Microsoft Unveils Xbox Live Support For Mobile Devices, PS4 And Switch A Possibility
It’s no secret that Microsoft is open to change and the forward moving idea of cross play. They’ve made recent moves in terms of their Xbox Live program, revealing their intentions to expand their horizons and make it available on other gaming platforms. Last month, they revealed their idea to the world. Suffice to say, not everyone is on board with the idea, but it’s certainly earned headlines and equal to that in momentum.
Despite console and platform alliances between all three major factions – Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony – the Xbox team believes the future of gaming lies in teamwork rather than division. They believe their Xbox Live program is the key.
“We believe so strongly in community, and Xbox Live really being at the heart of our gaming community,” corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Gaming Cloud, Kareem Choudhry, said in a statement. “If you watch what we’ve done, especially with Minecraft, over the past few years we’ve taken Xbox Live to as many platforms as Minecraft is on as possible. Really uniting all those communities together with a consistent singular experience for those gamers.”
Despite its availablility on iOS and Android devices for the time being, Microsoft is open to other possibilities as well and that includes PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. This implementation of this initiative wants to lend developers more freedom in creating the games they want to show to the community, without imparting the divisiveness of platform partiality. He adds:
Our goal is to really unite the 2 billion gamers of the world and we’re big fans of our Xbox Live community, but we don’t have any specific announcements as it relates to Switch today. If you’ve watched us for the past few years, we’ve taken a very inclusive approach. Phil [Spencer] has been very proactive on issues like crossplay, cross-progression, and uniting gamer networks, and we’re willing to partner with the industry as much as we possibly can.”
