Hideo Kojima Discusses Similarities Between Spider-Man And Japanese Superheroes

Spider-Man Hideo Kojima

Hideo Kojima is best known for his thrilling adventures set in the Metal Gear Solid universe, and with a brand new experience on the way from the renowned director, fans are getting pumped to see what it’s all about. That said, when Kojima isn’t bust developing video games, he is almost certainly watching films as he is a huge movie buff. One such film that has stood out for him this year is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and for good reason.

Spider-Man is one of the most popular American superheroes in Japan, and according to Kojima, this is due to the fact that the web-slinger has some similarities with Japanese superheroes. During a recent interview with Famitsu, Hideo Kojima noted how Spider-Man is similar to heroes like Kamen Rider and Tiger Mask. “He’s a hero with worries, and that’s similar to Japanese heroes,” Kojima said.

The Death Stranding director mentioned how the superheroes without flaw and those who are rich are less appealing to him, and that outside of Spider-Man, he is also a fan of the Flash and the CW’s TV series. “Don’t you think how Spider-Man was originally a normal person who, because of an accident, became a masked superhero has similarities to Kamen Rider,” Kojima asked. For those who don’t know, Kamen Rider is an ordinary person who was turned into a mutant grasshopper after being kidnapped by a terrorist organization. This led to a life of fighting crime, mask and all.

While Spider-Man isn’t the exact same as the Japanese heroes, they do have some similarities in terms of how they got their powers and what they choose to do with them as well as having their own personal battles to fight.
