God Of War Creator Disses AAA Games For Being Too Repetitive

Triple-A games generally do well, especially if the studio or series is as established as Assassin’s Creed, Pokemon, or Metal Gear franchise among others. With that said, a franchise can only go so far before it starts to look like the potential is being stretched thin. God of War creator, David Jaffe, has a word or two to spare on the front.

A veteran of the video game industry and creator of one of the most renown franchises known today, Jaffe contributes to the conversation on triple-A titles. It boils down to the latest titles being released haven’t transformed too much. They’re just nicer to look at now, but they’re too repetitive. To clarify his idea, Jaffe called the Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series to the floor, shining a particularly bright spotlight with a breakdown between Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (2007) and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Jaffe argues that it’s essentially the same game.

The conversation continued on Twitter. Fans contributed to the conversation as well and Jaffe responded in kind.

It’s important to bear in mind that Jaffe doesn’t believe that repetitive games are bad. Take his use of the Uncharted series for example. It’s easily recognizable for rehashed action adventure and third-person shooter, but they’re generally enjoyable games to play. Another franchise to consider is Call of Duty. Jaffe says:

That’s certainly one way to get the conversation started in the industry. What do you think about Jaffe’s words of wisdom? Do you think he has valid thoughts on the triple-A video game industry, especially since he helped in creating the original God of War series? Or do you believe he’s just putting out his two cents? Let us know what you think in the comments section below or start a conversation on DFTG Facebook page.
