Cyber Wolf Gang Hacked Square Enix Europe’s Twitter – Yikes!

Cyber Wolf Gang

Earlier this morning, Square Enix Europe’s Twitter account was under siege by hackers and the resulting Tweets were definitely not pretty. The hack occurred about 6 a.m. ET mocking the company with a host of bizarre and inappropriate messages for the Twitter account’s 151,000 followers to witness.

The hackers called themselves the Cyber Wolf Gang and went all out posting Tweet after Tweet, some claiming that “Fifa is such a s*** game” and “WTF is security” before going on to write derogatory statements about the developers and its followers. Unfortunately, even after Square Enix got control of their Twitter again, the hackers didn’t seem to be done there, as they then moved on to the official Just Cause Twitter to continue their rampage for a short while more. Many of the Tweets were screencaptured by TiLMEN of Twitter before being posted again, showing the world exactly what kind of damaging content this group posted on such beloved accounts.

Here is a slightly larger version of the image seen in the Tweet above, though we do warn, some of the Tweets contain offensive material:

So far, it does look like everything is back under control on both accounts, though the fact that the above image exists at all is a testament to exactly how damaging actions like this can be. The Tweets that went live called out multiple different companies, including Electronic Arts and Tech Crunch, while also mocking games like FIFA and Final Fantasy in a tirade that lasted much longer than it should have. So far, there has been no word on the motive behind why the hack took place or whether or not this was supposed to be a message by the Cyber Wolf Gang to gamers, but what we do know is this definitely is a good example as to why utilizing Twitter’s two-factor authentication is a good idea if you want to keep your account safe.

While this is an unsettling display of immaturity and disparaging action against a beloved developer, we can certainly say that this “hacking” is nothing compared to a real threat to online usage, such as the DDOS attacks that overtook Netflix, Spotify and Twitter back in October. Still, we hope that whoever these people are, they’ve had their fun and don’t try to go after any other accounts to try and continue this bothersome odyssey. Let’s leave future hacking to Sombra’s line of work, yes?

So what do you think of the hack that overtook Square Enix’s Twitter this morning? Do you think we’ve seen the last of this Cyber Wolf Gang? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
