Sony and Microsoft Partnership Clarified by PlayStation CEO

Sony and Microsoft Are Teaming Up For "Strategic Partnership"

News of companies Microsoft and Sony coming together for a game-streaming collaboration is still bouncing in the minds of fans. with many surprised the two competitors would ever team-up on anything so substantial. People were surely a surprised by such a huge announcement, including the likes of Sony’s PlayStation division, who were reportedly as blindsided as the rest of us. However, it appears there may be a reason as to why that is: the Sony Microsoft deal isn’t completely official yet.

Speaking at Sony’s recent Investor Relations Day event, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan clarified a bit about the company’s monumental relationship with Microsoft. “As of now, there’s no partnership between Sony and Microsoft,” Ryan revealed. The collaboration was cited by the SIE head as merely a “broad MoU,” or a memorandum of understanding; an agreement he described as “commits the two parties to explore talks in certain areas, of which game streaming is only one.”

While the big Microsoft Sony team-up isn’t as official as once thought, Jim Ryan’s clarification is by no means an indicator of the negotiations falling through. Announcing such a big partnership ahead of time would almost surely tell the opposite story, it signaling the former rivals were largely confident in the deal coming to a close. Though, one has to wonder what else Sony and Microsoft could have cooking, especially as it was suggested more than just game streaming is being discussed in these “exploratory talks.”
