MLB The Show 17 Throws Back to the 90’s with Retro Mode
If you’re a baseball fan, a sports game fan, or both then you may already be excited about Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr.being a part of MLB The Show 17. But for those of you who used to play some of his old feature games, you may be even more excited to know that Sony is planning to include a new feature called “Retro Mode”. This would give the game some 90’s style menu, music, and graphics changes. A sneak peek hit twitter yesterday that you can see here:

For those of you who are unfamiliar, Ken Griffey Jr. had four popular baseball games in the 90’s. Spanning from 1994 to 1999, the titles included “Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball, Major League Baseball Featuring Ken Griffey Jr., Ken Griffey Jr’s Winning Run, and Ken Griffey Jr’s Slugfest. If you were a sports gamer in the 90’s, or had a friend who made you watch or play with them (reluctantly raises hand), then this Retro Mode is sure to bring back some fond memories.
“Retro Mode allows you to move the pitcher across the pitcher’s rubber and move around the batter’s box with ease, classic on-screen displays, an old school soundtrack, unique sound effects, a throwback pause menu and more. Retro Mode is entirely separate to the popular Road To The Show, Diamond Dynasty and Franchise game modes. This new way to play MLB The Show is designed to be a fun, throwback game mode that instigates battles on the couch with friends.”
Ken Griffey Jr. is among 55 other legendary players in MLB The Show 17 who have appeared in previous games since 2015. In past games these players were fairly limited. You could play them in their team building mode “Diamond Dynasty”, or get them as free agents in Franchise mode up until MLB The Show 17.
While the game isn’t set to release until March 28th, it is available for pre-order now. If you’re an Amazon Prime member you may even enjoy a 20 percent discount as opposed to the current 15 percent. If you’re not sure, check out the trailer from PS4 pre-beta game build footage that was released yesterday during PSX and gives a look at the game for the first time!
For those willing to drop an extra 8 dollars, you can get the MVP edition of the game. For so little, the extra features include 5k Stubs, Sponsor Pack, 10 Standard Packs, a Gold Season Starter Pack, Limited Edition Steel Book, and themes for all of the teams. That’s a pretty big bang for your buck, especially if you play Diamond Dynasty!
Whether you’re into the game casually, or are a die-hard fan of the franchise, MLB The Show 17 is promising a little something more for everyone. The new Retro Mode definitely hits the nostalgia factor square on the head! We can’t wait to see the polished final product!
