Cyberpunk 2077: Original Tabletop Creator Talks Trauma Team Inspiration

Cyberpunk 2077 Trauma Team

One of the biggest mysteries surrounding CD Projekt RED’s upcoming futuristic RPG is its release date. While the game has certainly been in development for quite some time, we still don’t know when Cyberpunk 2077 will be arriving. Many believe such information will be revealed at E3 next month, but in the meantime, we’ll have to keep looking for more details, even if it’s about the inspiration behind the Trauma Team featured in the title.

Actually, that’s exactly what original tabletop game creator Mike Pondsmith recently did. While writing Cyberpunk, Pondsmith found the inspiration for Trauma Team. “Trauma Team was invented because at the time I was writing Cyberpunk, I had no way to get a “cleric” or “healer” on scene fast enough to save a dying player,” he said in a recent Reddit comment. “The AV4 came about because a paramedic pal of mine was always pitching about the idiot drivers blocking his ambulance when on a call and used too say it was easier when he was in evac choppers.

“The result was a group of heavily armed medics who showed up in a flying ambulance to save your butt in three minutes (a Cyberpunk “turn” is 3.2 seconds, so that’s roughly ten turns of bleed out.). Later, a very similar version just “showed up” in Shadowrun, which tells me they had the same problem we had.”

While it is no release date, it sure is interesting to learn how the Trauma Team came to be. Cyberpunk 2077 is currently in development for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
