Biomutant Review Round-Up (VIDEO)
Biomutant has been on gamers’ radars for a while, with developer Experiment 101 having first unveiled the unique RPG offering back in 2017 and subsequently seeing repeated delays in the years since, However, now that a release date has arrived, the game has appeared to shape up nicely, featuring a gorgeously created open world, a martial arts-influenced combat system, and players’ very own custom mutated animal character to head the adventure.
Considering the extended development and inspired design shown by Biomutant, fans of the RPG genre are surely excited to leap into the post-apocalyptic world. However, how is the game actually striking with critics? Well, according to launch-day reviews, the consensus hasn’t been completely flattering. Outlets have largely praised the lovingly realized world of Biomutant, but various bugs and its perceived by-the-numbers approach to open-world more or less robs the game of its immense potential.
- COGconnected – 78/100
“Biomutant’s world is enthralling. The art direction and characterization will beckon players to scour the entirety of the map, discovering items that develop the lore of the universe. However, the gameplay is hindered by performance issues and bugs which make some parts of Biomutant feel like a chore. Although the game falls short of greatness, this ambitious debut from Experiment 101 has me salivating for their next release.”
- Game Informer – 65/100
“Biomutant consistently shows glimmers of promise but it takes patience and a pair of rose-colored glasses to see them. I genuinely loathed my first several hours with the game, but once I made cooler weapons that made combat more tolerable or admired another postcard-worthy sight, I felt more disappointed than anything. Biomutant has all the ingredients of a unique, entertaining adventure. It just spends too much time doing everything possible to try and impress its audience instead of polishing its handful of strengths.”
- Game Rant – 50/100
“BioMutant is teeming with potential, but a lot of that potential has been squandered. It’s not a bad game, but it isn’t going to be the standout project THQ Nordic fans were hoping for. Still, even with all of its issues, players may find themself booting up New Game Plus mode once their journey has been finished, despite breathing a sigh of relief when they finally see the credits roll.”
- IGN – 60/100
“With excellent enemy creature design, a rich and diverse world, and piles and piles of choice when it comes to combat and customisation, Biomutant has a lot of the building blocks of a top-drawer action RPG. It’s really missing only a few, but they’re big ones: its cookie-cutter approach to objectives and puzzles feels two-or-so generations off the pace of other open-world action games, and that leaves the quest to gather all of the things feeling repetitive early on.”
- VGC – 40/100
“Biomutant’s feature list seems to include everything a successful open-world action RPG needs. But journey through its towns, fields and bunkers, and there’s no intrigue in its exploration or weight in its relationship building. Not even a worthy combat challenge to hold everything together. With so many ideas left under-developed, it wastes a setting that had far more potential.
Biomutant is now available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. What do you think? Are you bummed the game isn’t getting better reviews, or are you still willing to check out the game for yourself?
