GameStop’s PowerPass Program Delayed

GameStop PowerPass

Recently, popular video game retailer GameStop announced a new service allowing members to rent games. The PowerPass program would allow for those that paid a $60 semi-annual fee to rent used games. The program was scheduled to kick off on November 19th, but PowerPass will now be delayed.

According to sources, GameStop will be putting the PowerPass program on hold after focus tests revealed “limitations”. A spokesperson for GameStop stated:

We have elected to temporarily pause the roll out of the new PowerPass subscription service, based on a few program limitations we have identified. We feel this is the right thing to do for now to ensure we are able to provide our guests an exceptional service.”

GameStop has not announced what problems the PowerPass program ran into, specifically, but it was enough to suspend the service. Likewise, no mention of when the service is expected to return has been mentioned. GameStop employees have been directed to toss out the retailer’s Holiday Guide and this week’s weekly ad, as both featured heavy advertising for PowerPass.

GameStop PowerPass Program Delayed

PowerPass would allow for players to pay $60 for a six-month subscription to the service. PowerPass members would be able to rent an unlimited amount of used titles, one at a time, from the store in which they signed up. After the six month period, members would be allowed to keep one pre-owned game. The program seemed to pique the interest of many gamers on a budget, as well as those that remember the good ‘ol days of renting from Blockbuster.

For those that got early access to the program and already purchased their PowerPass, fear not:

For those guests who have already purchased the service, we will allow them to bring the pass, and video game they have checked-out, back to receive a full refund,” said the spokesperson. “In addition, we will allow them to pick out any Pre-Owned game for free.”

There’s no telling when the service will return, but rest assured that when DFTG knows, you’ll know. Were you looking forward to the PowerPass program?
