Cyberpunk 2077 Will Have Non-Binary Options For Character Creator
While impressions of CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 have been mostly positive, the game has had a lot of issues in its messaging and marketing. From the Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account posting transphobic jokes to an in-game billboard that also wasn’t well-received by the trans community, it has not been a good look for the game. Additionally, Cyberpunk games tend to focus on transhumanism and the fluidity of identity usurping the gender binary. An early demo of the game showed off the character creator that seemed to restrict players to a Male or Female character archetype and was disappointing to many fans. However, there seems to be some significant changes coming to Cyberpunk 2077 in that regard.
CD Projekt RED’s senior concept artist Marthe Jonkers spoke with GameCentral about the new options for players in character creation. “Our character creation menu, for instance, compared to the last demo we now give you so many more options…you don’t choose your gender anymore,” he began.
You don’t choose, ‘I want to be a female or male character’ you now choose a body type. Because we want you to feel free to create any character you want. So you choose your body type and we have two voices, one that’s male sounding, one is female sounding. You can mix and match. You can just connect them any way you want.”
Whether or not CD Projekt RED can treat such sensitive topics with an informed, respectful perspective remains to be seen. Hopefully, CDPR has reached out to members of the trans/NB communities for consulting on how to have positive representation. Cyberpunk 2077 will be released on April 16th, 2020 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and PC
