Original Super Mario Bros Arcade Game Is Coming To The Nintendo Switch (Finally!)

While a number of new titles have made the Nintendo Switch a success, an official Virtual Console has yet to bring past games to the system. In the meantime, those who crave a retro collection may be enticed by Hamerster’s Arcade Archives series. Under the imprint, several arcade classics are set to be faithfully reproduced for the Switch with the original Mario Bros. having already hit the eShop in September. Now, it looks as though Vs Super Mario Bros will be the next title to join, dropping just in time for the holidays.

From the looks of a recent Japanese holiday booklet, we can expect VS Super Mario Bros to release in Japan on Friday, December 22nd. For those outside the know, the VS variant of the classic NES platformer allows for two players to compete against each other, but features several redesigned levels and a considerably steeper difficulty. Since 1986, the game was exclusively available in arcades, but the upcoming port will mark its arrival on consoles for the first time ever.

Another game mentioned in the ad was the side-scrolling brawler Double Dragon, which is also dated for a week later on Thursday, December 28th. It’s worth mentioning that neither of these dates have been officially confirmed by Nintendo, or mention of a stateside release date. If they end up being true, a US release would likely be close by, as was the case with the release of Mario Bros. additional Arcade Archives games we can look forward to in the coming months include Punch-OutVS Balloon FightVS Clu Clu LandVS Ice Climber, and VS Pinball.

What do you think? Are you excited to play Vs Super Mario Bros, possibly for the first time, or are you more looking to whoop some thugs in Double Dragon?
