EA Response To Battlefront II Microtransactions Backlash Most Downvoted Reddit Comment History (UPDATED)

[EDIT: Since the time of publishing, EA has responded by lowering the cost of the heroes in question by releasing a new statement: “Making games great comes from regular tuning. As one example, today we’re making a substantial change based on what we’ve seen during the Play First trial. There’s been a lot of discussion around the amount of in-game credits (and time) it takes to unlock some of our heroes, especially Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. Unlocking a hero is a great accomplishment in the game, something we want players to have fun earning. We used data from the beta to help set those levels, but it’s clear that more changes were needed.

So, we’re reducing the amount of credits needed to unlock the top heroes by 75%. Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader will now be available for 15,000 credits; Emperor Palpatine, Chewbacca, and Leia Organa for 10,000 credits; and Iden at 5,000 credits. Based on what we’ve seen in the trial, this amount will make earning these heroes an achievement, but one that will be accessible for all players.

It’s a big change, and it’s one we can make quickly. It will be live today, with an update that is getting loaded into the game.”

Original story is as follows:

This week sees the launch of the sequel to EA and DICE’s first successful foray into the Star Wars Battlefront franchise, and it seems that most of the recent conversation about the game has focused less on the sequel’s new additions, but the proliferation of microtransaction-support in the game’s design. Many critics have accused EA of promoting a pay-to-win gaming environment with Battlefront II, leading EA to rework some of the game’s crate reward system. To further defend their implementation of crates and microtransactions in the game, EA has commented on the controversy, to a backfiring effect. This EA comment has now become the most downvoted Reddit comment ever.

The comment seen above was posted on Reddit by the official EACommunityTeam account in an attempt to appease fans that complained about the systems in Battlefront II. Their defense mostly hinges on them wanting to make players feel accomplished for unlocking new items and characters, especially the iconic characters that will take many hours of gameplay to unlock. However, the option to essentially buy these unlockables with real money has rubbed many the wrong way, and EA’s comment only further irritates those who share that opinion.

This specific Reddit comment from EA has now garnered over 500,000 downvotes (as of writing) and growing, making it the most downvoted Reddit comment ever by far. The comment thread has now been locked, and EA has not provided any further comments on the negative Reddit responses. There’s no telling how this can affect EA’s future handling of Battlefront II, or even if it will change anything, but there’s no denying how many voices have found unison against one of the most divisive uses of microtransactions in a game. What do you guys think about EA making the most downvoted Reddit comment ever? Let us know in the comments below!
