Reggie Fils-Aime Says SNES Classic Production “Dramatically Increased” – “Not Our Fault”

The pre-order problem with the SNES Classic brought back too many memories for gamers that weren’t able to get their hands on the consoles predecessor. A shortage that was heard around the world helped the little gaming bundle of joy sell out within minutes of going live. Before this, Nintendo had said the same issue would not occur that did with the NES Classic and that more would be produced. According to Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, SNES Classic production is definitely on the up and up.

In a recent interview with Financial Times, Fils-Aime talked about the upcoming console and what Nintendo is doing to ensure everybody gets one. He says that nobody should be paying more than the $80 sticker price and that SNES Classic production has been “dramatically increased”. This may have not been evident during the limited pre-order window, but Reggie claims that was entirely on retailers and “outside our control”.

If Fils-Aime is keeping it real, it would seem that supply is not going to be an issue and that we just have to trust the process. He also advised against purchasing the console from scalpers. “I would strongly urge you not to over-bid on an SNES Classic on any of the auction sites . . . You shouldn’t have to pay more than $79.99,” he stated in the interview.

As for the shortage with the NES Classic, Fils-Aime chalked that up to Nintendo being hesitant about that type of console. They looked at other similar retro machines at the time and were unsure if they would actually be in demand. Needless to say, the company simply didn’t produce enough. Reggie even debunked the theory that it was completely intentional just to create artificial hype. The SNES Classic is set to hit shelves on September 29, and it is only then that we will learn if Nintendo is truly prepared this time around.
