The Original StarCraft is Available for Free Following First Patch in Over 8 Years

original starcraft brood war

Blizzard’s real-time strategy game StarCraft was the hit many of our childhood, teenage, and let’s face it, adulthood years as well. The game’s interesting alien atmosphere mixed with its immensely addictive gameplay have made it a solid experience that holds up even among today’s offerings. For this reason, it makes sense that Blizzard is putting out a remastered version of the beloved sci-fi game set for release later this year, just before the game’s 20th anniversary. Those of us who haven’t had the chance to experience game’s majestic campaign won’t be left out of the hype train either because Blizzard has recently re-released the original StarCraft and its Brood War expansion free for all gamers to enjoy. Downloads are available on Blizzard’s official Battle.net website for both PC (download) and Mac (download).

Released alongside the free edition of the original StarCraft was also a new patch that updates the original 1998 game’s presentation for modern computers. The most significant changes the new patch adds is the addition of an Observer mode for spectating battles, enhanced compatibility with the more recent versions of Windows (7, 8.1, and 10), and support for both windowed and full screen viewing. Online play has also been patched as well, increasing internet responsiveness and featuring improved UI accessibility. The full patch notes can be read here.
