Nathan Fillion as Wonder Man? It’s a Definite Possibility in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Nathan Fillion

When Guardians of the Galaxy 2 came to theaters earlier this year, some fans were disappointed that the film lacked a certain cameo that they were eagerly awaiting. Despite the many Easter eggs throughout the movie, the one starring Nathan Fillion as Wonder Man’s secret identity Simon Williams was cut for time reasons. Although the actor agrees with the decision, he is still hoping that Wonder Man will get his moment in the sun. Recently, Fillion did an interview on a radio station speaking about his cut cameo and it is there that he says he hopes this disappointment is actually a disguised opportunity.

If you know the Marvel Universe, Simon Williams becomes Wonder Man, becomes an Avenger. So, he’s part of that universe. It was a neat little Easter egg, it was a neat little piece of the universe. It didn’t get into the movie. That’s fine. That happens all the time. I still had the same wonderful experience. But moving forward, I don’t know, let me see what we can do with this opportunity. That’s just a cleverly disguised opportunity. Am I right?”

Although the cameo did not include Nathan Fillion dressing up as Wonder Man or even acting scenes out as Simon Williams, he did dress up as Williams. The cut cameo was just a series of movie posters with Williams aka Fillion promoting a film festival, but the director of the movie, James Gunn, was still sad to see it go. Gunn told fans shortly after the sequel’s release that he thought Fillion was perfect to play Wonder Man and that he hopes the character will “rise again”.

I really do love the character of Simon Williams/Wonder Man in the comics – a sometimes douchey actor/superhero – and could see Nathan clearly in that role (not because he’s a douche bag but because he’s great at playing one). But, of course, in a movie set 99.9% in space I didn’t really have a place for him. So in a small flash to earth I decided to put a theater playing a ‘Simon Williams Film Festival,’ with six Simon Williams movie posters outside. Obviously, from the posters, he’s had a run of B movies. Unfortunately, the small section of the scene where they appeared slowed down the movie and I had to cut the Easter eggs from the film (along with storefronts named after comic book luminaries Starlin, Mantlos, Annett and others).”
