Disney Looking At Taking The Star Wars License Back From EA, Ubisoft And Activision Of Interest

Star Wars License

It was back in 2013 when Electronic Arts received the exclusive licence to make Star Wars games, a decision Disney seemed confident with considering the massive successes under the company’s belt. However, the galactic fan backlash behind resulting (and unresulting) titles has reportedly left Disney with no small amount buyer’s remorse, and could conclude in the Star Wars license being taken back from EA.

The decisive Disney rumor comes from Cinelinx, who reveals that the company met with EA higher-ups to discuss the state of their Star Wars video games. They’ve also reached out to rival publishers Activision and Ubisoft to see if other game companies would be interested in the Star Wars license. The report claims the supposed licensing deal between Disney and EA has a clause that could allow for Disney to back out if certain standards aren’t met.

Star Wars License

Some are likely to rejoice in the potential news of Disney taking back the Star Wars licence, as EA rubbed many gamers the wrong way with Star Wars Battlefront II‘s loot box controversy and the cancellation of Visceral Games’ single player project. It should be stated that this news be taken with a double dose of salt given that Cinelinx doesn’t provide any substantial sources to back up their claims.

While EA’s handling of the Star Wars licence would definitely warrant disappointment from Disney, it’s entirely possible that all parties are satisfied despite the ongoing controversies. Unless Disney makes an official announcement about the rumor, there’s no way to know for sure. Star Wars Battlefront II is out now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
