Fans Can Expect a “Very Different” Marvel Cinematic Universe After Phase 3

Since its full-fledged dive into the silver screen, Marvel has had a structured story telling base in phases. Characters pop in and out of each other’s movies and the films all follow one over-arching story. Now, coming to the end of phase 3 with Infinity War and a yet to be named 4th Avengers movie, Kevin Feige has come forward in an interview with Collider saying that the next step will be a very different Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to Feige, the studio will have completed phase 3 by 2019 with Captain Marvel, a Spider-man sequel with Sony Pictures, and the 4th Avengers movie. In between are a handful of films that will keep fans busy for the next two years. With new contracts coming on and old ones getting ready to expire, what comes next for this very different Marvel Cinematic Universe is anyone’s guess. Feige did weigh in with a few vague but interesting hints.

“We’ve been lucky that [contract expirations] haven’t factored in too much. We’ve had people under contract for certain films, then we’ve had new ideas and new directions like Civil War like we wanted to do, and we’ve been lucky enough to make new contracts. Or Spider-Man: Homecoming, the cast has been awesome in their enthusiasm for the direction and the storylines that we’ve been telling. So it really does, right now, all start with where we wanna take the stories. Certainly as we get to Infinity War there is a sense of a climax if not a conclusion to, by the time we’re at untitled Avengers 4, the 22 movies that will have encompassed the first three phases of the MCU. And what happens after that will be very different. I don’t know if it’s Phase 4, it might be a new thing…We have an idea [of what the MCU looks like post-Infinity War], and it’s gonna be very, very different.”

Infinity War is currently in production and slated for release on May 4th of next year. While the studio had initially sought to shoot Infinity War in two parts, they have now decided to make Avengers 4 its own film. This may be a hint (albeit speculatively) at what the future of this very different Marvel Cinematic Universe might look like, with Infinity War being a precursor to something potentially bigger. Unfortunately, for now, fans will have to wait to find out more. Good thing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is coming out next week!
