The Blizzard Team Says Don’t Expect Non-Blizzard Games on Battle.Net in the Future

Blizzard's Platform

Ever since Battle.net’s launch in 1996 alongside the release of Diablo, Blizzard has used the platform to perpetuate player communication and socializing across the multitude of Blizzard games that have come to call Battle.net home. Now, over 20 years later, it has been announced that Destiny 2 on PC would be sold and played through Blizzard’s platform, making it the first third party game to ever truly exist on Battle.net. Up until now, the company has never shown any outward interest in hosting other developer’s games on their platform, which begs the question – do they plan on opening the gates to other developers?

Blizzard's Platform

Well, the short answer is no. Despite it seeming to be Activision Blizzard’s first step in challenging the might of Valve’s goliath gaming platform, Steam, a recent blog post from has surfaced to confirm that this is a one-off for Battle.net. It was also a chance to elaborate on the ‘why’ behind Blizzard’s decision to host Destiny 2 on their platform. “Our focus in terms of supporting non-Blizzard games is solely around Destiny 2,” said Blizzard in the blog post. “Aside from potentially evaluating needs or opportunities for future Activision games, we don’t have any short or long term plans to support third-party games with Battle.net.

We’re big fans of Destiny here at Blizzard, and we’re honored to be able to help the talented folks at Bungie and Activision bring their much-anticipated sequel to a new platform.  Being on Battle.net will allow Destiny 2 to plug in to our existing global network, freeing up the developers at Bungie to focus their energy and resources on making the best and most fun game they possibly can.  This also means Destiny 2 players will have access to our online social functionality, including chat with friends the ability to see which of their friends are online in Destiny 2 or in Blizzard games, and the ability to stream gameplay directly to Facebook.”

Given that both Destiny 2‘s publisher Activision and Blizzard are both subsidiaries of parent company Activision Blizzard, it makes perfect sense for the companies to combine their efforts in ensuring that Destiny 2 has a successful launch. This, combined with the fact that all profits from Destiny 2’s purchases on Blizzard’s platform will be shared in-house makes this a winning idea for them, one that may be utilized for more Activision games moving forward.

So, what are your thoughts on Destiny 2 being hosted on Blizzard’s platform? Do you agree with Activision Blizzard’s thought process? Do you plan on picking up Destiny 2? For which platform?
